The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in Palma

A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier has arrived in Palma de Mallorca. The crew of the nuclear-powered USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, consists of 3200 Marines and 2,400 Air Force members, of which about ten percent women.

The ship in the Nimitz-class has a total of 90 combat aircraft and helicopters on board and can reach a top speed of up to 56 km / h (30 knots). The ship was built in 1977 , right on time for being present in  1980 in the Persian Gulf and later participated in action in the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq.

By the late '80s, the regular presence of U.S. aircraft carriers was something normal in the Bay of Palma. At the end of the Cold War the United States shifted its operations to the Middle East.

Currently, the giant ships come to Mallorca only about once a year.
